What Makes This Granola Passover-Approved?
This Passover granola uses a gluten-free matzo farfel, which is made from tapioca starch, potato flour, and potato starch. Matzo farfel is essentially crushed matzo and non-gluten-free matzo is made with flour and water. This granola is both nourishing, gluten-free, and Passover-friendly.

Recipe Ingredients
You will need the following ingredients to make this granola for Passover:
See the recipe card for quantities.
Additions & Substitutions
This Passover granola recipe is simple enough that you can easily change the flavor based on your personal preferences.
Additions:
- Flavoring - Mixing in some vanilla extract, almond extract, or cocoa powder will give a unique twist to the Passover granola.
- Chocolate chips - I love chocolate and adding some chocolate chips will up the flavor.
- Salt - I like to add a touch of flaky sea salt, or even a small amount of kosher salt, to the mix before I store the granola.
Substitutions:
- Dried fruit - Though raisins are used, swapping them for golden raisins, dried blueberries, dried cranberries, or cherries gives the granola recipe a fun, fresh taste.
- Nuts - Any nuts you enjoy and have on hand will work for this recipe. Some fun ones to add are pecan halves, cashew halves, slivered almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and pistachios.
- Brown sugar - You can use maple syrup, coconut sugar, regular sugar, or honey as a replacement for brown sugar.
- Butter - Replace the butter with margarine if keeping this kosher and pareve.
- Oil - You can use any oil in this recipe that does not have a strong taste. While canola oil is good in this recipe, I recommend avocado oil or even a light-tasting olive oil.
- Matzo farfel - If you do not want to buy pre-made matzo farfel, you can take regular gluten-free matzo and crush the sheets into small pieces until they resemble a coarse grain.
How To Make Passover Granola: Step-By-Step
Here are some quick visual instructions. Remember that full instructions with the exact ingredients are in the printable recipe card:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Start by melting the butter, oil, brown sugar, and water in a small saucepan on the stove or the microwave oven in a microwave-safe bowl.
Step 2: Place the matzo farfel, nuts, cinnamon, raisins, unsweetened coconut flakes, and dates into a large bowl. Add the melted butter mixture. Combine until the farfel mixture is mixed and slightly sticky.
Step 3: Spread the granola mixture on a greased or lined rimmed baking sheet in one even layer.
Step 4: Bake for roughly 25 minutes, stirring 2-3 times during the cooking process until the granola is golden brown.
Let it cool on the cookie sheet before enjoying it or storing it.
Recipe Tips
- Make sure you line your cookie sheet with either parchment paper or a silpat mat.
- The amounts for the raisins and dates are just a recommendation. If you love them, add more.
- This Passover granola can easily be doubled or halved depending on what you need It for.
Confidence Tip
In the last 5-7 minutes of cooking, watch the granola very carefully. You want to ensure that the raisins don’t burn.
Storage And Reheating
- Store - Let the Passover granola cool fully before storing it. When it’s ready, place it in an airtight container. On the counter, granola will last 5-7 days.
- Refrigerator - You can also store this granola recipe in the refrigerator where it lasts up to a month. However, it will harden up so it is not recommended.
- Freeze - Do not freeze.
How To Enjoy It
Passover granola can be enjoyed as a simple breakfast or a grab-and-go snack. Some of the best ways to use up granola are:
- Smoothie topper - Top your favorite smoothie with granola for an added crunch.
- In place of Passover cereal: Skip the store-bought cereal and enjoy this gluten-free granola with a splash of milk.
- Parfaits - Granola works on top of yogurt parfaits, chia pudding, and overnight oats for an added indulgence.
- Ice cream - As a topper for your favorite ice cream plus you can add your favorite fresh fruit.
- Snack - I portioned the granola into ziploc bags for my kids to take to school for an afternoon snack or lunch or for my husband to take to work! His secretary asked for this granola all throughout the year.
Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! You can store granola in the freezer in a plastic bag for up to 3 months. Let it thaw in the fridge overnight when you’re ready for it. This is a great way to keep granola fresh.
So long as your granola doesn’t contain any grains you can enjoy it as a snack or breakfast during Passover. Note that gluten-free matzo cannot be served during the Seder meal so enjoy this on other days.
