This banana bread is made with everyday pantry staples you already have on hand. It comes out moist thanks to the addition of sour cream, the secret ingredient, and can be used as a dessert for any gathering or just a treat on a chilly day.
An easy banana bread recipe that can be made into a banana cake, or chocolate chip banana muffins. The chocolate lover in you will thank me for this recipe and the perfect way to use up over-ripe bananas.
This is one of my go-to favorite quick breads; however, if you are looking for other quick bread recipes try the Orange Glazed Cranberry Bread, or the Gluten-Free Pumpkin Muffins. In the fall I love drinking the Iced Pumpkin Spiced Latte with this bread!
Why Youโll Love This Recipe
- Easy to make: With minimal ingredients and prep work, this chocolate chip banana bread whips up pretty quickly.
- Versatile: You can easily vary the flavor of the banana bread to suit your preference. Likewise, there are a handful of add-ins you can play with too.
- Comforting: All your favorite banana bread flavors wrapped with dark chocolate bites in a moist loaf.

Ingredient Notes:
Two of my secret ingredients are high-quality chocolate chips and pure vanilla extract. When I can't get my favorite chocolate, which is a top-notch Belgian, my standby for this recipe is the Ghiradelli 60% dark chocolate chips. They do the trick as does Morton and Basset Pure Vanilla Extract.ย

Additions and Substitutions
Banana bread will never go out of style which is why itโs sometimes fun to add new toppings or flavors to dress it up. Below are a few favorites.
- Crunch: Topping the chocolate chip banana bread with chopped pecans or walnuts makes for a fun texture or add them into the batter.
- Drizzle: To make the recipe more indulgent for a holiday dessert, drizzle it with a homemade caramel sauce, or a chocolate ganache.
- Chocolate: Always a fun switch up, opt for white chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate, use milk chocolate chips, or use mini chocolate chips in place of the semi-sweet chips.
- Peanut butter: Add a ยฝ cup of smooth peanut butter to make peanut butter banana bread.
- Cinnamon: Add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon to amp up the flavor.
How To Make Moist Chocolate Chip Banana Bread: Step-By-Step
Step 1: Cream your unsalted butter and sugar with a mixer on medium speed before adding the eggs one at a time.ย
Step 2: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking soda.
Step 3: Mix the dry ingredients into the wet batter in small amounts while alternating with the sour cream.
Once ready, add in the vanilla extract, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and ripe bananas and mix until combined.
Step 4: Divide the batter in half and pour each one into a greased loaf pan.
Bake until golden brown and cooked through. Cool on a rack fully before slicing.
Expert Tips
- To make the flavor of the banana bread pop, you want to use very ripe brown bananas. Opt for bananas on the verge of turning brown or already brown. This helps the bread stay sweet and have a potent banana flavor.
- Grease your loaf pans or opt for silicone ones. This way your banana bread slides out easily without tearing. My favorite is to use Bakers Joy spray. It has flour in the spray and it will allow you to easily turn out these loaves.
- Sour cream is what makes this banana bread ultra-moist. Make sure to use a regular sour cream and not a low-fat one to maximize the richness.

Store
You can store this banana bread recipe in a few different ways.
- On the counter: Place the banana bread into a container with a paper towel on the bottom to absorb moisture. It will stay fresh for 4 days at room temperature.
- In the refrigerator: In an airtight container, banana bread can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. It does dry out a bit faster this way so youโll want to heat it lightly in the microwave before enjoying it.
- In the freezer: You can freeze the banana bread as a whole loaf or in slices in the freezer. Wrap it in plastic wrap and place it into a freezer bag for up to 3 months. To enjoy it, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight first.
Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! You can easily use bananas youโve frozen for the bread. Let them thaw first though and drain away any excessive water.
If you donโt have ripe bananas on hand, try breaking them apart and placing them in a paper bag overnight or longer. You can also speed up the process by placing bananas into the fridge and they will ripen faster.
If you donโt have sour cream on hand, plain Greek yogurt or Labneh will work in its place.
Other Chocolate Desserts:
That's it! Delicious banana bread. Cut a slice, warm it in the microwave for 15 seconds, or toast it and slather it with butter. It doesn't matter how you eat this......it is super yummy!
