Aloha! We are still in Hawaii and enjoying the wonderful warm and sunny days! Our kids made it in and will be staying with us for the remainder of our trip.
What's Happening
Our NYC kids finally made it to the island this week. Our son's first and second requests were ahi tuna overload (mercury poisoning from overeating tuna) and coconut shrimp. He had both within 24 hours of landing, lol.
Since we visit this island every year, we relax and walk most mornings. We eat out at a couple of good restaurants but we don't sightsee much. Since the kids are now with us on this trip, we will show them some of the local haunts and tourist spots.
One of the first things we did was pick up a local dish called Manapua. These are Hawaiian steamed buns filled with pork and water chestnuts. They are delicious, not gluten-free, but a must if you can find them. Several places sell them but only one restaurant that is a "must" to buy them. They go on sale at 11 am and sell out fast!
I also cut open a Sugarloaf pineapple. You can only find these at the farmers' market. They are quite sweet and tender. So tender that you can eat the core! The other fruit I cut into was a soursop. It has a tender, inside flesh that is sour and delicious.
We had fun yesterday taking the kids to see the sea turtles. The turtles come up on shore every afternoon, and they lay in the hot sand. Yesterday, there were 18 of them!
Links And Products I Am Loving
- While I will probably not have a chance to see this, this grocery store was voted the best in the Nation.
- This list is the best restaurants to try in 2025. How many have you tried?
- For kids and adults alike, I love this card shuffler. I play cards with friends on occasion and it makes shuffling cards super easy!
- It's winter in the Midwest and I always grab some lip balm. This is my favorite that I use every night before bed and my lips stay completely hydrated.
- The Butter Baked Cake Company has become an easy favorite. I tried these at the Fancy Food Show and love that they are gluten-free, keto, and sugar-free. I have ordered several to eat at home!
- I use Redmond's Real Sea Salt at home. It has replaced Kosher salt for everything except baking. I use this on my roasted veggies, to salt sauces, and so much more. The flavor profile is exceptional and mineral content is high!
- Souper Cubes. I can't say enough about these. I have been using these for a few years. They go from the refrigerator to the oven to the freezer. They clean up like a dream. For years I used them to prepare and store Sam;s dog food as well as soup and leftovers. Recently I bought the small tablespoon size to freeze herbs in the late summer. They are well worth the buy!
Recipes
This week we added two new recipes to the website. The first is a Middle Eastern Chicken that uses spices similar to za'atar. It is an easy weeknight make-ahead chicken that can be baked or grilled. The second recipe is roasted cauliflower with a lemon tahini dipping sauce. The sauce can also be drizzled on the top of the cauliflower.
